Who are we?

I’m Trevis, an early retired travel lover who has decided to take the opportunity of a lifetime to trade a conventional working life for one of long term travel. My profession was as a software developer and software development manager.

More people probably know me through my hobbies, though. Specifically social dancing (Salsa, Zouk, Argentine Tango, Swing, Bachata, Kizomba) dancing and photography. I plan to share my favorite images and the boring details of our slow traveling lives here and on Facebook.

I’m Chrissy, and my love for travel began when my parents, a pastor and a stay-at-home mom, took me and my sisters on road trips around the Midwest to visit relatives during summer vacations. We spent long hours in the car reading books and singing silly songs broken up by picnics, camping in our tent, and playing with cousins.

As an adult I started planning trips with friends to places like New York, Mackinac Island, and the Gulf Coast. Then I met Trevis and he caught my travel bug – yay! We both got passports and took off on our first of many trips together.

On My Bookshelf in China

I began with the intention of reading a particular book during our time in China that I had seen recommended – I won’t name names, but it was not for me.

Huangshan – Yellow Mountains

The region is well known in China because of the yellow mountains. It’s a spectacularly beautiful area with stark granite peaks and sheer shards of rock jutting straight up into the sky at stunning angles.

After my success sending mail back to the US from Mexico, I was more confident that I’d be able to repeat my success in another country.

During our first two days in the Huangshan region, our travel agent set us up in a rural boutique hotel called Pig’s Inn Bishan.

We visited Shanghai for the first time in 2017. It was a pretty short stay that time too, but we did manage to see The Bund and go to the top of Shanghai Tower for epic city views. This time our time in Shanghai was generally unplanned.

Let’s Visit a Japanese Onsen Ryokan

As part of our visit to Mt Fuji, we spent a night at a traditional Japanese ryokan.

Tokyo Metro

In an attempt to keep costs from going parabolic we are committed to trying to use buses and metro’s when we can to save money.

Mount Fuji

A couple of weeks before coming I did a little digging and found a two day, overnight Mt. Fuji tour which would pick us up in Tokyo, visit some of the popular stops around Fuji and bring us back to Tokyo the next day.

First impressions: Japan

I will admit that most of my knowledge of Japan comes from video games and entertainment. That combined with the western fascination with Japan’s… lets just say cultural quirks I really just didn’t know what to expect.

Grutas Tolantongo Hot Springs

About 80 miles outside of Mexico City is where you’ll find Grutas Tolantongo hot springs. It’s a beautiful spot surrounded by mountains where pools have been built fed by the natural warm mineral water.

Let’s Go to the Post Office

While I think that sending physical mail is something that is becoming less and less common in favor of electronic communication, I do have a handful of people in my life who I send and receive mail from, usually greeting cards or postcards.

Palacio de Bellas Artes

Palacio de Bellas Artes is a stunning theater which was built about 100 years ago. Construction started in 1910 but was disrupted by the country’s revolution and so it wasn’t completed until 1930.

Transportation in CDMX

Transportation within Mexico City is what you’d expect from any modern city. Taxis, buses, trains, rideshare all are present and work as you’d expect.

Xochimilco

About an hour outside of Mexico City is where you’ll find Xochimilco (sow·chee·meel·kow), home to a series of floating islands. Though, they aren’t actually floating islands, they only appear that way. The islands are connected to the earth.
