Who are we?

Trevis

I’m Trevis, an early retired travel lover who has decided to take the opportunity of a lifetime to trade a conventional working life for one of long term travel. My profession was as a software developer and software development manager.

More people probably know me through my hobbies, though. Specifically social dancing (Salsa, Zouk, Argentine Tango, Swing, Bachata, Kizomba) dancing and photography. I plan to share my favorite images and the boring details of our slow traveling lives here and on Facebook.

I’m Chrissy, and my love for travel began when my parents, a pastor and a stay-at-home mom, took me and my sisters on road trips around the Midwest to visit relatives during summer vacations. We spent long hours in the car reading books and singing silly songs broken up by picnics, camping in our tent, and playing with cousins.

As an adult I started planning trips with friends to places like New York, Mackinac Island, and the Gulf Coast. Then I met Trevis and he caught my travel bug – yay! We both got passports and took off on our first of many trips together.

Where we are, where we've been?

Auckland, New Zealand

What have we been up to?

On My Latvian Bookshelf

We are staying in an apartment on the top floor of an old, brick, apartment building on the edge of Riga’s old town. One of the first things I looked through after arriving was the collection of books displayed in the china cabinet.

Let’s Go to the Post Office in Latvia

We are staying at the edge of the old city of Riga, where there is a concentration of tourism – hotels, restaurants and bars, museums, street vendors, and gift shops.

Foraging in Lithuania

A friend of ours lives in Lithuania, she’s far from the capital city living in a small rural town. She’s quite a wonderful person and we haven’t seen her since she moved out of the US to be back home

Church in Latvia

Arriving in Latvia from Turkey, we were startled by the contrast between the two.

Riga’s Open Air Museum

What is an open air museum? Neither of us had heard this term while living in the US, but have visited several since beginning our slow travels, and you have likely visited at least one yourself, perhaps on a school field trip.

Welcome to Rīga, Latvia

Before coming here, I knew very little about Latvia — and I’m still just scratching the surface. But the moment you arrive in Riga, the capital, one thing stands out immediately: the stunning beauty of its Art Nouveau architecture.

On My Turkish Bookshelf

My knowledge of the history of Turkey, or anywhere in that part of the world, is pretty scant.

Cappadocia, Turkey

We’re wrapping up an unforgettable stay in Cappadocia, Turkey, and I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights from our time exploring this surreal region.

Let’s Go to the Post Office in Türkiye

I put this post office visit off until almost the very last minute. Nothing against post offices, it was simply that I dreaded leaving the air conditioning and pool to go out in the 100 degree heat to do anything at all.

Three Weeks in Fethiye

We came to Fethiye, Turkey with no real agenda—just a desire to relax, enjoy the water, and slow things down after weeks in vacation mode traveling through Tokyo, multiple cities in China and Istanbul.

Church in Turkey

Finding a Christian worship service in Turkey can be a little bit challenging given that while there are a fair number of Christian churches which show up on the map, many of those are now only museums and don’t actually hold any worship activities.

Medical Care in Fethiye

A part of diving into this insane new way of living is figuring out how to take care of routine medical care when you’re not using standard American health insurance, and you’re in countries where you don’t speak the language.

I Got a Haircut in Turkey

My last U.S. haircut was in March. I’ve trimmed my own bangs along the way, but four months is a long time to go in between haircuts.

Welcome to Istanbul

It’s amazing seeing these thousand year old structures and marveling at standing in these places that you’ve seen and read about in history books.

China

As a person who was born and lived his whole life in the United States, my knowledge of China from an early age was always seen through that lens. The far east, this mysterious place with unusual customs and strange food that they eat with sticks?!?

On My Bookshelf in China

I began with the intention of reading a particular book during our time in China that I had seen recommended – I won’t name names, but it was not for me.

Huangshan – Yellow Mountains

The region is well known in China because of the yellow mountains. It’s a spectacularly beautiful area with stark granite peaks and sheer shards of rock jutting straight up into the sky at stunning angles.

Let’s Go to the Post Office in China

After my success sending mail back to the US from Mexico, I was more confident that I’d be able to repeat my success in another country.
