Sending postcards home from Spain was a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride due to Europe’s response to increased U.S. tariffs. … Spain might not send mail to the U.S. … Spain will send mail, just not packages. … Spain says they will send anything under a certain value, but individual post offices might interpret that as sending nothing at all.
I think it was near the end of our stay in Latvia when I first heard that European countries were perhaps going to stop sending mail to the U.S. because of these added tariffs. At the end of August, Spain as well as other European countries announced that they would no longer send packages valued over $100. Okay, I thought, but regular correspondence is still mailing as usual though, so nothing to worry about. I bought my postcards. Then I saw some posts in online forums by a number of people in Spain saying that Correos had refused to take the letters or cards they wanted to send to the U.S., and upon questioning were told that Correos wasn’t sending anything of any value. For a while I thought I might end up needing to send my postcards from Florida, and what’s the point of that?
Eventually I decided to ignore everything I was reading online and just take my postcards to the Correos office and hope for the best. We walked down the street to the nearest Correos, took a number and I handed my postcards to the clerk. She looked at them and asked me to wait a moment … so that she could go to the back to get more stamps. No drama, not even a raised eyebrow. My cards are, I presume, on their way. To be determined when/if they make it to their recipients across the Atlantic!
