New Zealand Post … Office

New Zealand seems to have a very streamlined postal system in place. I don’t know if it has operated this way forever, or if it is the result of cutbacks away from a system more like I’ve encountered in the U.S. and everywhere else so far, but I have yet to see a dedicated post office here.

I have seen NZPost delivery vans driving around and houses with mailboxes at the end of the drive, as well as drop boxes on street corners, but so far the places I’ve seen where you can go buy postage or send something off have been integrated into another place of business. I’ve seen the NZ Post logo outside of grocery stores and convenience stores, and the one where I sent my postcards from was inside a bookstore which also had a copy/print service and sold lotto tickets.

At the NZPost in Wānaka, New Zealand

As we approached the storefront that Google Maps was leading me to, it wasn’t obvious that we were in the right place, though I did notice a sandwich board sign on the way out with the NZPost logo. I walked in and ignored all the shelves of books at the front of the shop and headed toward the cashier. There was a display around the corner from her with various sized envelopes and boxes, but that was my only indication that I was in the right place. I approached the woman there and said I had some postcards to mail to the U.S. She nodded and said, alright, I can take them here. Then when she saw them, started and said, oh, you still need stamps! She reached under the counter and counted out five stamps and rang them up for me. (I verified this later, but the postage to mail a postcard within New Zealand is the same cost as mailing one internationally. Is that the case in every country? It is not. USPS will deliver a postcard domestically for .61 and internationally for 1.70.) Anyhow, I applied the stamps, handed her the cards, and she took care of the rest … then sold a lotto ticket to the next customer in line!
