It’s been a long, long time coming but today is the day that our dreams of starting world travel as nomads is now. Yesterday morning we woke up in Houston, Texas and last night we went to sleep in our adorable first floor apartment (Airbnb) in Mexico City.
Visiting Mexico City has been on our radar for some time but we just never got around to it before now. We speak a little Spanish and Mexico is an easy flight from the US so it seemed like a fitting place to start our slow travels.
The flight from Houston to Mexico City is only about 2 hours. Customs / Immigration in Mexico was efficient and we were out of the airport and in an Uber in less than an hour.

We’re staying in a neighborhood called Polanco which is nice and quiet. The area is residential with lots of little apartments and so far it seems that the most important things are easily walkable, including groceries and some restaurants.
Something that others may not realize about CDMX is how much cooler the weather is here than in the southern US states. When we left Houston yesterday it was a sticky humid morning and already quite warm. When we landed in Mexico City it was cooler than when we left the US but more importantly far, far less humid. What’s not obvious and something that I didn’t know until fairly recently is that Mexico City is over 7,000 feet above sea level. It’s 2,000 feet higher than Denver!
We don’t really have any plans for today. I expect we’ll go exploring the neighborhood on foot and hopefully find a park or a museum. I stumbled into a facebook group for West Coast Swing here in CDMX and it turns out they have an instructor from Argentina leading workshops tomorrow afternoon. That will likely be our social dancing here. I’ll let you know how it goes.
